Coming to the Appalachian Studies Conference in Shepherdstown, WV? We are! Feel free to post in the comments about the sessions, presentations, exhibits, and activities that make ASC 2016 the place to be.
Check out a new collection of the short fiction of Tennessee writer, Emma Bell Miles (1879-1919). This collection has been edited by ALCA member and president emeritus, Dr. Grace Toney Edwards. We are very happy to have a new opportunity to celebrate the work of two influential Appalachian women!
In a few minutes the 2015 NCTE Convention will be underway in Minneapolis, MN. Weather is supposed to be cold but mostly clear.
I'm really looking forward to the luncheon Saturday; Frank X Walker will be speaking. Writer, educator, friend to the arts in Appalachia, Frank is a fantastic speaker! This year ALCA will have our usual Special Interest Group meeting on Saturday during the SIG hour, so if you're attending the convention, we hope you'll join us. We have several positions, including chair, coming open shortly. We have a short meeting tonight (June 18) at 5:30 in BT's in Radford, but we'll be issuing a formal call for officers and new members online. Are you interested in helping ALCA reach its full potential? Do you have a passion for teaching, arts and literature, the Appalachian region? Watch this space for details!
Yesterday a jury convicted Anne "Mickey" Faville's husband of voluntary manslaughter in her 2000 death. Shortly afterward he killed himself. Rather than remember the last words of the man found guilty of ending her life, let's remember that life.
Let's remember a friend to ALCA, an elementary school teacher who loved her work and loved writing. Let's remember her at the HIghland Summer Conference; let's remember her own words. Below are poems from Mickey Faville herself, published in the 1994 edition of ALCA-lines. In the middle of the busy-ness of life, let's remember the power of truth and fireflies. I want to sit in the clover On the hill in the dew And count and see Them all so none is wasted Or goes wanting For notice. Welcome to our brand-new webpage. Through this blog, we hope to bring you regular updates on resources for teaching, new publications, and events throughout the regions. We hope you'll bookmark us. Thanks for stopping by, and please come again!
