What is ALCA-lines?
ALCA produces an annual journal available to all members. ALCA-lines, our print journal, showcases essays about the teaching experience, reviews of Appalachian books, teaching ideas and experiences, and original creative work from writers and artists around the region. All paid members, including students, receive the most recent issue as part of their membership dues. If your work is published by ALCA, you will receive a free contributor's copy.
Submitting to ALCA-lines
We accept articles about teaching, lesson ideas, poetry, short fiction, essays, art, and photographs. Submissions should relate to our goals, which may include promoting literature, arts, and culture of the region. You do not need to be a member or a resident of Appalachia to submit. All submissions will be reviewed by ALCA editors. All submissions must be your own, original work; please seek permission before submitting previously-published work.
Art Guidelines
All art will be rendered in black-and-white or gray-scale, so please keep that in mind when submitting original artwork or photographs. Submit with your title or genre, your name as you wish it to appear in the magazine, and a short 50-word biography. Image files may be sent to [email protected]. For instructions on submitting hard copies, please contact us.
Writing Guidelines
All submissions must be in a standard 12-point font. Poems should be limited to 50 lines or fewer; prose submissions should be limited to 1,500 words. Include your title, your name as you wish it to appear in the magazine, and a short 50-word biography. Electronic submissions preferred; send submissions as .doc files to [email protected]. For instructions on submitting hard copies, please contact us.
